From Pinterest to Publish: My Creative Process for brand Shoots
Pinterest boards are cute. But they’re not creative direction. Show me your inspo, and I’ll turn it into content that actually does what you need them to.
Concept & Storytelling
Before we even start on the fun stuff, I’m thinking about why this shoot exists. Who is going to see it? What do you actually want out of it? Website banners, social media, a launch campaign - every piece of content needs to serve a purpose.
Early in a project, I always pull the conversation back to your ideal customer. What makes them pause? What makes them care? That thinking shapes everything - from styling to angles to lighting - before the first shot is even taken.
The difference between a shoot that’s “nice” and one that actually does the work? Clarity on purpose first, everything else falls into place naturally.
Styling & the Location
Styling isn’t about “lots of props.” It’s about restraint. Every prop, every texture, every angle has to mean something to the story and messaging you’re trying to tell.
Equally… the right location alone does more than 20 props ever could. The right light, shadows, surfaces - that’s what gives images editorial weight. Nothing overcomplicates the frame. Nothing distracting. Breathing space matters.
Light, Angles & Photography
When you show me your inspiration images or videos, I’m thinking about all the details: time of day, shadows, natural or artificial light, angles, proportions, lenses. Every choice subtly sets the mood.
Sometimes clients come to me with three completely different “looks” for one shoot. Part of my job as the creative partner is to figure out - for your marketing or content goals - what actually makes sense. What will resonate, what will elevate your brand, what will work across all the places it’s going to live.
Because that’s the other thing: where these images end up matters. Phone screens, magazines, website banners - it changes how I frame, shoot, and sometimes even style. Every shot is intentional, never just “pretty.” And that’s exactly why you outsource this part.
Capturing the Brand Aesthetic
Every shot should feel like your brand. Colours, textures, tone - consistent across the content. And yes, I love sneaking in personality: the founder’s hands, subtle lifestyle cues, lived-in corners. These aren’t random - they tell a story and make the brand feel human, editorial, real. People want to see more human.
Post-Production & Finishing Touches
I don’t storyboard my campaign videos down to the last frame. Shock horror to all the traditional media productions out there.
I have the story: the setup, the conflict, the resolution, and the key beats we need to hit. But it’s not until I sit down, plug in that monstrous monitor, slap on the headphones, and start editing that it all actually comes together. This is where the magic flows - where pacing, rhythm, and the story actually reveal themselves.
Post-production is where the chaos becomes clarity. By the end, it’s not just images or video clips - it’s a story that works, flows, and hits the exact points we need for your campaign, launch, or social content.
